With Christmas approaching more quickly then perhaps we’d like its time to post some Christmas carols. Here I present three quite different versions of Gaudete, all a cappella and all in Latin.
The first is by The King’s Singers, a British a cappella group originally formed in 1968 and still performing world-wide. It’s a very professional video from a few years ago. Sadly it’s mimed, but beautiful to listen to.
The second is by one of my favourite folk-groups from the 70s – Steeleye Span. This is a live, on-stage performance and very casual, as evidenced by the wine being consumed at the time. Amazingly it charted well in the UK in 1973, one of only three Latin songs ever to do so.
The third is a multi-track version with all parts recorded by my favourite a cappella singer, Sam Robson. I’ve already posted a couple of his videos, and this is another cracker. You’ll find many more of his hymns and carols on his YouTube page.
